English: A view of the Acropolis (center, left) and the Temple of Olympian Zeus (Olympieion or ᾽Oλυμπιεῖον – center, right) as seen from the Ionic temple of Artemis Agrotera (partial view at the rightmost part of the picture) on the Ilissos river (bottom, right). The ancient temple of Artemis Agrotera (Ναὸς τῆς Ἀρτέμιδος Ἀγροτέρας) was built in 448 BC, probably by Κallikrates (Καλλικράτης), and dismantled 1778 by the Turkish governor of Athens in order to use the material on a new city wall of Ottoman Athens. Depicted, by the Temple of Artemis Agrotera, Greek ladies perform a dancing ritual of passage to womanhood according to ancient Greek tradition.
