Deutsch: Die Stadt Velen führt das Wappen, Banner und Dienstsiegel des früheren Amtes Velen-Ramsdorf, wie es der Innenminister mit Erlass vom 17.11.1961 (Abl. Reg. Münster 1962, S. 7) verliehen hat, in der Fassung, wie es der Regierungspräsident zu Münster mit Urkunde vom 14.11.1977 (Abl. Reg. Münster 1977, S. 286) genehmigt hat. „Das Wappen der Stadt Velen zeigt im vergrößerten gelben Schildhaupt drei balkenweise gestellte rote Merletten, unten in blau eine mit gelbem Kreuz besteckte gelbe Ramme.“ Vor der Fusionierung der Gemmeinden Velen und Ramsdorf zeigte das Wappen Velens nur die drei roten Merletten (Das Wappen der Familie von Velen.) auf goldenen Grund. Die Merlette ist ein heraldisch gestutzter kleiner, entenartiger Vogel; ihm fehlen Schnabel und Füße. Viele Heraldiker sehen in der Merle eine gestümmelte Amsel. Ramsdorf zeigte in Blau, die mit einem Kreuz besteckte goldene (gelbe) Ramme.
English: „The arms were granted on November 14, 1977, first granted for the Amt Velen-Ramsdorf on November 17, 1961. The birds are taken from the arms of the family Von Velen. This family was first mentioned as Lords of Velen in the 13th century and received in 1379 the village officially in loan from the bishop of Münster. In the 17th century the family split in the Counts of Velen (see Raesfeld) and the Lords of Velen. The latter still owned Velen, but became extinct in the 18th century. The colours are taken from the arms of Münster. The birds formed the arms of Velen until 1977, which were combined with the block from the arms of Ramsdorf.The previous arms were granted in 1961 and only show the three birds.“
