Object history
Sankt Goar).
English: The arms already appear on the oldest known seal of the city, known since 1380. The upper half shows a lesser lion, derived from the arms of the Counts of Katzenelnbogen, who acquired the area in the 13th century. Saint Goar was the capital of the Lower County of Katzenelnbogen. They probably also granted the city rights around 1250-60 (look Sankt Goar). The lower half shows a chevron between three fleurs-de-lis, similar to other cities in the Upper County of Katzenelnbogen, the are pertaining to the Patrocinium of Virgin Mary of Darmstadt.
